Shah Rukh and Lalit Modi watching the FIFA World Cup Semi-Final
The football fever is on in full swing with the Grand finale of the World Cup 2010 scheduled to take place this Sunday. A lot of our Bollywood celebs are already in South Africa or on their way to be part of this sporting extravaganza.
Spotted at yesterday’s semi-final match between Spain and Germany was none other than superstar Shah Rukh Khan along with his kids Aryan and Suhana. SRK was joined by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi who seemed to be enjoying himself. Lalit Modi tweeted, “Beautiful eve in Durban. Nil at half time” While SRK and his son were rooting for Germany, Lalit Modi was supporting Spain.
In the end it was Spain who emerged victorious much to King Khan’s disappointment. SRK tweeted, “Germany my team lost…feel bad taking my lil ones to matches where our team loses…but one day insha allah we will win…trust me kids.” Now that his favourite team is out, it will be interesting to see which team SRK cheers on in the big final this Sunday- Spain or Netherlands?
Hollywood calling for Sonam Kapoor
She’s riding high on the success of ‘I Hate Luv Storys’, her first hit in Bollywood, and now Sonam Kapoor has more reasons to celebrate. It seems that she’s been offered roles in two Hollywood productions, one of them with Ben Stiller. Apparently, dad Anil Kapoor (who’s made a name for himself in Hollywood after ‘Slumdog Millionaire’) met Stiller to discuss a joint production, and that’s when Sonam’s name came up. She is also supposed to have been offered a role in a movie by Eduardo Ponti (the son of legendary actress Sophia Loren) which will be shot in India.
Sonam is said to be thinking about these roles, as she has a busy schedule ahead. She’s shooting for ‘Mausam’ with Shahid Kapoor and ‘Thank You’ with Akshay Kumar this year.
Will Sonam head for Hollywood and make an impression like her dad did? Watch this space for updates.
Imran’s surprised by response to ‘I Hate Love Storys’
And what’s he saying about those marriage date rumours?
‘I Hate Luv Storys’ has collected approximately Rs.21.5 crore in the domestic circuit in the first three days of its release and hero Imran Khan says he is surprised by the “grand opening” it has got.“I feel honestly very surprised with the numbers. I had told (director) Punit Malhotra that it’s a very good film and I was quite confident with the way it was promoted, but I didn’t expect such a opening,” Imran said.
Asked if he thought it was wise to release the film after ‘Kites’ and ‘Raavan’, he said: “I think everything went in our favour. There are things you can’t plan for and everything happened by good fortune.”
Imran has signed a film with producer-director Karan Johar and it was rumoured that he would be romancing Kareena Kapoor in the movie.
“See, I have signed another film with Karan, but until he announces it I can’t talk anything about it,” Imran said.
Imran is also wrapping up director Kunal Kohli’s ‘Break Ke Baad’, in which he will be seen opposite Deepika Padukone.
“It’s a romantic and coming of age film. It’s multiple genres,” the young actor said, unwilling to disclose anything more about the film.
Speculation was also rife that Imran may tie the knot with his girlfriend Avantika Malik in January 2011, but he denied it, saying that he would be shooting during that period.
“Actually in January, I will be shooting for Karan’s film,” he said.
Karan Johar, a director’s journey!
All that reminiscing last week about my father got me nostalgic about another kind of journey; the journey of becoming a director.

Most filmmakers will say that watching a certain film cemented their desire to make films. For some, it may be a natural, nepotistic calling. For me, it came about it in a rather comical way.
I was all of 16. I had joined St Xaviers College because I was convinced that advertising was my calling. I remember my first day of junior college vividly. I was wearing jeans and a bright red shirt, tucked in mind you, even though my waistline shouldn’t have allowed for it. I was so thrilled at the prospect of not having to wear a uniform anymore that I went all out. Of course, I was ragged severely for it, but despite that, I went on to settle in quite nicely, even managing to make a few friends along the way. Everything was going as planned, as close to an Archie comic as possible, until the day I went home to be confronted by my weeping mother. She was upset that I had chosen to study arts. According to her, “Boys don’t study arts,” because what kind of a sustainable future would I be able to have with a degree in fine arts? Already traumatised by my father’s choice of profession (and no matter what era we talk about, producing films will always be an uncertain business, a gamble to say the least), and having to bear the realities of the ups and downs that came with it, she understandably didn’t want to see her son embarking on an equally ambivalent track. It should be mentioned here that the Sindhi in her had to somehow find a way to turn one of the men in her life into a businessman. That weepy afternoon went on to change my life in ways I could never have imagined.
And so I joined HR College, still dressed as brightly as possible, and very studiously began my education in commerce. This time I didn’t get ragged for my clothes, but for a supremely embarrassing acting gig on the TV serial Indradhanush, which was airing at the time. I was playing a stupid fat boy named Dodo, and no one let me live that down. Well, except for Jugal Hansraj, one of my oldest and dearest friends. Jugal had just done an equally embarrassing TV commercial for which he was getting teased to no end, so we stuck together, quite like the geeks in glee club do. It was during those days that Anil Thadani, future exhibitor, distributor, and entrepreneur, reintroduced me to a one Aditya Chopra. I had known Adi as a child, meeting him periodically at Abhishek Bachchan’s birthday parties. At the time, the South Bombay brat in me thought Adi, Uday, Abhishek, Hrithik, and Farhan were these uncool boys who would recite dialogues from films like Kranti, Deewar, and Trishul. Adi on his end thought I was snooty, but somewhere between snobbery and curiosity, we found a common ground in college and went on to become best friends.
College, and commerce came to an end, and I had decided that my future lay in France. I had completed a course at Alliance Francaise and was determined to spend a year of my life studying and travelling around France. We had paid all the necessary fees and living expenses and I was all set and ready to go. As is usually the case however, destiny it seemed had other plans. Adi called me one night, a night close to my departure. We had discussed earlier on the possibility of him making his first film, and had gone back and forth on the story a little. That night he asked me to assist him. But I was all set to go to France. Why, I asked him, did he think I would want to work on his film instead? He said, “You’re melodramatic and over the top, and you’ve always got a song and dance bursting out of your head. If you’re not a Hindi filmmaker, I don’t know who is.” I’ll never forget those words.
And so I had a sleepless night. I woke up in the morning, and foretelling as it may have been, asked my father for a year of my life to explore the world of making a film, much like Kajol asking Amrish Puri for a month of her life in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, my first official film. I was of course a mess on the first day, tripping over tracks and smashing into fans and so Adi wisely felt I was better suited for costumes, and gave me carte blanche to style Shah Rukh Khan as I felt best. Day two came along and Shah Rukh seemed to like a patch I had added to a sweater he was to wear. The patch, mind you, was a last minute fix-it to cover up a hole, but therein, I made another friend. Much like Adi, I suppose he had seen something in me, for it didn’t take him long to tell me, “You should make a film. You’ll be good at it. I’ll be in it.” Kajol, sitting behind him, wrapped up in a shawl pulled her nose out of the book she had been devouring and concurred, “It’ll be fun. I’ll do it too!”
Of course, it wasn’t for a couple of years till I wrote Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but somewhere, my future was mapped out for me, and my journey had begun. Was is because of my emotional mother’s worry for our financial future, or Aditya Chopra’s amusement with my personality, Shah Rukh’s fancy for an interesting patch, or just my father’s filmmaking genes that had finally come to the fore? I may never know what made me a filmmaker, but I’ll always know the people who made me, and that, in a nutshell, is the first act of my story.

I’ll follow SRK on Twitter soon: Aamir Khan
One wonders if Aamir Khan’s rivalry with Shah Rukh Khan has so far kept him away from following him on Twitter, but the Lagaan actor says he would love to track Shah Rukh’s posts on the micro-blogging site.
“I have lots of friends in life but I don’t follow everybody on Twitter. It’s just been a few days since I have joined the site and I will start following people soon and yes, I would love to follow Shah Rukh on Twitter. Why not?” Aamir told reporters here Wednesday.
Till now, Aamir follows Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar and nephew Imran Khan only.
Though the actor-filmmaker was here to promote his next production Peepli Live, he was being asked everything else but about the film.
On being asked to react about megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s return as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Aamir burst out laughing as it didn’t have much to do with his film.
“I used to love watching KBC with my family. My children also used to sit and watch it. And I certainly am excited about seeing Amitabh-ji back on the show,” said Aamir, who was earlier rumoured to be hosting the upcoming season of the show.
Aamir was also at his jocular best when he was asked to wish Dhoni for his birthday Wednesday.
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you…Happy birthday dear Dhoni, Happy birthday to you,” sang the actor and burst out in laughter.
Congratulating the cricketer on his sudden wedding, Aamir said: “I congratulate Dhoni and wish him all the best. We hope he has a happy and successful marriage.”
The actor, dressed in a casual shirt and a pair of jeans, was here with Peepli Live director Anusha Rizvi and her co-director Mehmood.
Peepli Live is the fourth film from Aamir Khan Productions Ltd after Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India (2001), Taare Zameen Par(2007) and Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na(2008).
Aamir hopes the one hour 45 minute long satirical film sensitises the audience about the “growing divide between urban and rural India”.
He clarified that the film is not on farmer suicides and it is not inspired by any single incident in the society.
